Dental Implants

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium metal. It is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. A replacement tooth is then attached to the implant. The implant acts as an anchor to hold the replacement tooth in place. If you are in good general health, have healthy gums and have enough bone in the jaw to hold an implant, dental implants might be right for you. If your jawbone has shrunk or if it has not developed normally, you may be able to have a bone graft to build up the bone. A bone graft is a way of adding new bone to your jaw in the area where the implant will be placed. For more information about dental implants click here.

At Appletown Dental Centre we can perform both the surgical placement of a dental implant and restore an individual tooth or denture on top of an implant. Implants are now the gold standard to replace a single tooth, and are also a great option to replace multiple missing teeth, or to stabilize partial and complete dentures.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental work that improves the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums and/or bite.  Today, cosmetic dentistry is more popular than ever, from whitening and shaping teeth to closing spaces and replacing missing teeth. We have a wide array of tools and techniques at our disposal for improving the look of your smile.

Tooth Whitening – Over time, teeth can become stained or discolored, especially after smoking, taking certain medications, or consuming foods and beverages such as coffee and tea. Using a chemical process, we can whiten your teeth in a safe way to improve their appearance.

Bonding – White fillings bonded to teeth may improve how your teeth look if they have excess space between them, or if they are chipped, broken, stained, or cracked.  We also use bonding materials to fill small cavities or to protect the exposed root of a tooth.

Crowns, Bridges, & Veneers

Veneers – These custom shells, typically made of porcelain (sometimes plastic), cover the front sides of the teeth to change their color and/or shape. Veneers last longer than bonding and provide a superior appearance.  Veneers can improve teeth that: have spaces between them, have become chipped or worn, are permanently stained, are poorly shaped, are slightly crooked.

Crowns – Sometimes called caps, crowns completely cover a tooth, restoring a normal shape and appearance, and reduce the likelihood of a heavily restored tooth from breaking.

Bridges & Dental Implants – These two options are similar in that they are both fixed in place (not removable like a denture) and used to replace missing teeth.  Bridges are anchored to teeth on either side of a missing tooth, and dental implants replace the missing tooth directly.

Dental Emergencies

This is a broad term used to describe an issue involving the teeth and supporting tissues that is of high importance to be fixed or treated by a dentist.  Most true dental emergencies involve a toothache or other pain in the mouth or jaw joints (TMJ).  Pain can originate from the tooth, surrounding tissues or can have the sensation of originating in the teeth but be caused by an independent source (sometimes sinuses). Depending on the type of pain experienced we can determine the likely cause and can treat the issue appropriately.

We will always attempt to make time to see our regular patients of the practice, who are experiencing a dental emergency, in a timely fashion.  Non-patients of our practice may be seen at this office if there is an available appointment in the schedule, but we will often refer these patients to our affiliated office, Fundy Dental Centre.

Sedation Options

Anxiety at a dental office is often a significant barrier to treatment. Dental fear is deeply seeded and some patients cannot get past their anxiety to receive the dental treatment they require without help.  At AppleTown we try to make our patients’ experience at the office as comfortable as possible, and offer a number of sedation options to achieve this including pills taken orally and nitrous oxide gas.

Almost all sedation options in dentistry are considered conscious sedation.  Conscious sedation refers to the process of relaxing patients (depress the level of consciousness) so they do not care about the dental procedure in progress, but respond appropriately to verbal commands.  We do not put you to sleep, but sedated patients may fall asleep during the dental procedure.  Also, many forms of conscious sedation have an amnesic component, so a person will likely not remember the procedure the next day.

At Appletown Dental Centre, we primarily use mild sedation options (pills and gas).  Most of our patients that want IV moderate sedation will have the procedure (wisdom tooth removal, dental implant placement, multiple extractions or major restorative work) done at our affiliated office in Coldbrook, Fundy Dental Centre by Dr. Schofield & Dr. Alrafidi.

Hygiene & Prevention

Our office takes great pride in the preventative services that we offer through our regular recall appointments.  In general, most patients benefit from dental scaling (cleaning your teeth) twice a year.  This is the most predictable way to reduce the chance that you will have progression of receding gums and gum disease.  Some patients with moderate recession, aggressive oral bacteria and/or difficult areas to clean on their own return to the office three or four times each year for scaling. If you have any specific questions about your own oral health and recession status, please ask one of our hygienists or dentists at your next check up.

Fillings

A dental filling is the general term to describe a material placed in a tooth to maintain its health and function.  We place fillings primarily after removing cavities or to repair broken teeth.  Most fillings now are placed with with the white composite material, but we also have metal and porcelain options.

Pediatric Dentistry

A healthy, pain-free mouth is essential for a child to thrive. Primary or baby teeth are important not just for a child’s ability to chew and digest food, but also to act as a guide for their adult teeth as they erupt into the mouth. Issues with primary teeth can also impact the health of the underlying adult teeth. Monitoring the developing teeth, jaw and tissues are all important parts of pediatric dental care. Children that visit the dentist early and on a regular basis are the most accepting of dental care, develop the best habits early in life, and have the least dental fear.

Root Canal

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is the process of removing an infected, injured or dead nerve from your tooth. The space inside the hard layers of each tooth is called the root canal system. This system is filled with soft dental pulp made up of nerves and blood vessels that help your tooth grow and develop. When the nerve of a tooth becomes infected, a successful root canal treatment lets a person keep their tooth rather than having to pull it out. Keeping your tooth helps to prevent your other teeth from drifting out of line and causing jaw problems. Saving a natural tooth avoids having to replace it with an artificial tooth. Root canal therapy does have a bad reputation, but is a successful procedure, especially when the treated tooth has a crown placed afterwards to protect the tooth from breaking.

At Appletown Dental Centre, we will advocate that you keep your own teeth whenever possible. Many of our artificial tooth replacement options are very good, but there is no substitute for the real thing. If an infected tooth is restorable (can be fixed, which is not always possible), you should consider root canal treatment instead of extraction. In an emergency situation we can remove the infected nerve/pulp (start the root canal), and then you can consider rescheduling an appointment here or with your own dentist to complete the root canal, or decide to remove the tooth if this is more appropriate in your situation.

Removal of Wisdom Teeth and Oral Surgery

Oral surgery is any procedure that involves cutting into or removing tissue from your mouth. It includes procedures like removing a tooth, gum surgery, and receiving dental implants. Oral surgery also includes getting rid of diseased tissue from the mouth, correcting jaw problems, or repairing a cleft lip or palate.  These latter procedures are usually by an oral & maxillo-facial surgeon (OMFS) after referral from your general dentist.

Our office performs many surgical procedures, including simple and surgical tooth extractions, wisdom tooth removal, dental implant placement and other minor surgical treatments.  We also work closely with our local OMFS to provide the most appropriate care for our patients.  Dental surgery is easily performed with local anesthetic (freezing), but many patients choose one of our sedation options for these appointments.

Perio & Ortho

OrthoPeriodontics refers to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the supporting structures for your teeth (gums, ligament and bone).  The basis for good periodontal health is each patient’s proper oral hygiene practices at home.  We emphasize this preventative care at regular dental recall exams and scalings to monitor periodontal health and reduce the likelihood of gum and periodontal disease from progressing.  Some periodontal surgery is performed at our office, but we also work closely with our local periodontist to help our patients maintain their own teeth for the rest of their lives.

People of any age can benefit from orthodontic treatment. Teeth that are crooked, crowded, or that stick out affect the way your teeth look and function. Orthodontic treatment not only improves the look of your smile but your health as well. Straight teeth are easier to clean and less likely to get tooth decay or injured. If you are not happy with the way your teeth look or work, orthodontic treatment may help.

At Appletown Dental Centre, we offer Invisalign as an excellent option to straighten teeth when there are not significant jaw alignment problems.  We also work closely with our local orthodontist and can provide some other interceptive orthodontic treatment (spacers, and other minor appliances).

Clear Aligners

People of any age may benefit from orthodontic treatment. When teeth are misaligned, this can impact the health of the teeth. The straighter teeth are, the easier it is to keep them clean, and the less likely they are to fracture or crack over time. In patients with misaligned teeth, we often see more calculus deposit on the teeth, jaw issues, premature wear of the biting surfaces of the teeth, or issues with the supporting tissues of the teeth. Clear aligners are an effective, esthetic and safe way to correct tooth alignment when there is minor spacing or crowding. We also work closely with our local orthodontist when other, more complex treatment is indicated.

Botox

Botox treatment can be used in the face and jaw for both esthetic and therapeutic purposes. Many patients benefit from treatment of the muscles of mastication (the muscles that help us chew, or the muscles involved when we clench or grind our teeth). Treatment of these muscles has been proven to decrease pain and frequency of headaches associated with a bruxism habit. Additionally, Botox treatment of the upper face (eyebrows, forehead, crow’s feet) can help decrease the fine lines we see in skin as we age. Treatment typically lasts from 3-4 months.
